Lacey Skinny Crochet Heart

Hello there! In this tutorial I’m gonna show you how to crochet this adorable heart.

I wanted a modern looking heart to make toys and ornaments for my girls. I looked up on Pinterest, but I didn’t like the ones I’ve found. There are plenty of nice patterns out there, but I wanted a skinny heart, not an anorexic one. :P So I decided to design a decently skinny heart myself.

Difficulty

advanced beginner

Terminology

I’m using US terminology.
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
inc – increase (ex: 2 dc in same stitch)
dec – decrease (ex: 2 dc worked together or dc2tog)
fo – fasten off

Round 1

Magic ring, 2 sc in magic ring, then close it. (2 sc)

Turn work, ch 1. (When working in rounds, most crocheters first make the chains and then turn work. I find it easier to turn, then chain.)

Round 2

*You just chained 2, so you begin working in 3rd stitch from hook. Careful with that. ;)
inc, sc in last st. (3 sc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 3

dc in each of next 2 sc, inc. (4 dc)
Turn, ch2.

Round 4

inc, dc in each of next 2 dc, inc. (6 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 5

Dc in each dc. (6 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 6

dc, inc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, inc, dc. (8 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 7

Dc in each dc. (8 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 8

Dc, inc, dc in next 4 dc, inc, dc. (10 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 9

Dc, inc, dc in next 6 dc, inc, dc. (12 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 10

Dc in each dc. (12 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 11

Dc, inc, dc in next 8 dc, inc, dc. (14 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 12

Dc, inc, dc to the end. (15 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 13

Dc in next 13 dc, inc, dc. (16 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 14

Dc, inc, dc in next 12 dc, inc, dc. (18 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 15

Dc in each dc. (18 dc)
Turn, ch 2.

Round 16

Dc, inc, dc in next 14 dc, inc, dc. (20 dc)
Turn, ch 1!

This is how your work should look like after finishing round 16:

Now we begin the upper part of the heart. It’s a bit tricky but I hope I’ll explain it properly. For the first upper part, we will work into the first 10 stitches only.

Round 17

At the end of previous round, you turned work and chained 1, because we will make single crochet stitches for this round. So, begin working in second stitch from the hook.
Sc in next 10 dc. Turn, ch 2.

Round 18

This round is worked with double crochet.
Dec, dc next 6, dec. (8 dc)

Turn, ch 1.

Round 19

This round is worked in half double crochet.
Dec, hdc in next 4, dec. (6 hdc)
Turn, ch 1.

Round 20

This round is worked in single crochet.
Dec, sc in next 2, dec. (4 sc)

FO. Cut yarn.

Now comes the really tricky part. Take a look at the pic below. The stitches marked in white are the correct 10 stitches in wich we will work the second upper part of the heart. The 2 stitches marked in blue are the ch 2. And the stitch marked in yellow is where we will attach the yarn.

Round 21

So, turn work and attach yarn in the indicated stitch, as shown below:

This is how it looks after attaching the yarn. This is the back of the heart (don’t worry about the yarn ends on the front, we will weave them in later). The stich marked in yellow is the first sc. So begin working from there.

Sc until the end. (10 sc)

Turn and ch 2.

Round 22

This round is worked in double crochet.
Dec, dc next 6, dec. (8 dc)

Turn, ch 1.

Round 23

This round is worked in half double crochet.
Dec, hdc next 4, dec. (6 hdc)
Turn, ch 1.

Round 24

This round is worked in single crochet.
Dec, sc next 2, dec. (4 sc)

FO. Cut yarn. Now repeat the whole thing and make the second heart. :)

Joining

Now weave in ends…

… and start joining the two hearts. Start from the bottom and single crochet along the edges.

Don’t forget to stuff them lightly before ending the joining.

No matter how careful you are, there will be some holes, like the one in the pic below. To fix them, leave a loooong end after you finish joining, and carefully “sew” those holes.

Lacey Border

I can’t give you an exact place to start. Look at the pic below for reference. I usually start from the bottom and crochet a sc, ch2, sc in the same stitch, skip a stitch, again sc, ch 2, sc all in the next stitch, skip a stitch, and so on.

When you reach the middle of the upper part, make only one sc right in the middle, as shown below.

When you reach the end, sl st in the first sc and FO. Cu yarn, weave in ends. Your skinny heart is finished! YAY.

Now you can decorate it. I gave my heart a face, because my daughter wanted to. You can attach a ribbon, or decorate it with beads, crocheted flowers or whatever. Or you can just leave it as it is, it’s still cute.

Have fun and happy crocheting!! I really hope you found it useful. Please pin it on Pinterest and share it with others. Ty. ^_^
